The trackbed is concrete strips cast in situ, 5 foot at a time. The stonework below it on the bend is I suppose strictly a foundation but it is also retaining the soil. Our bank is about 75% stone so a retaining wall is hardly necessary. However a retaining wall will be be built eventually. The stone on the bank above the railway was recovered while digging the walkway out. We have now (almost) finished laying track in the station, and the steps into the garden, so the next job is to build the retaining wall above the trackbed to keep the weeds off the track, and edge the newly terraced area on the next level up.
Eventually there is another 300 ft of trackbed to make to continue the track to the end of the garden, loop around and come back across the steps three steps up. Probably need a less labour intensive technique for that!
Significant further progress! Is the trackbed slabs or blocks – and is that foundation or retaining wall that can be seen below.
